Third bathroom light

Replacing a buzzy flickering florescent light with a bright white LED 4-foot fixture. pdf version

My house was built around 1986, when soffits for the baths and kitchens were all the rage. The bathroom soffits hold 4-foot florescent fixtures. Some were flickering, some were buzzing, the master bath lamp was doing both. Rather than try to put in new bulbs, new starters, or new ballasts, I took the opportunity to replace the whole fixture with ultra-bright daylight color temperature LED lamps. It is a stop-gap measure. The neighbor tipped me off on how much bigger the bathrooms look when you rip out the soffit. I plan to do that as I remodel the bathrooms. In the meantime I like of lot of bright quiet lights in the bathrooms, and these fit the bill well. When it is time to rip them out, I can put them in the garage, where it's always good to have more light.

These are the 4-foot replacement fixtures I am using in the bathrooms, the utility room, and the garage, as well as a walk-in closet.

The light is even and very bright. It makes using the bath a pleasure.

It was a good opportunity to make sure there were GFI outlets. I use white plates to show that they have been replaced.

Two lights and a fan switch, the old stuff.

Here is the new switches and cover plate. Lowes sells switches without a surround bezel around the lever. Home Depot sells these switches, that do have the little bezel around the lever that sticks through the holes in the plate. I am not yet sure which I like better. The switches without bezels have a wider lever, which is nice.

It was nice to buy a fixture or two every time I was at Home Depot and methodically replace the lamps in the house.I never bothered with the master bath, since that is getting remodeled first.
